Against All Odds – Part II

Many conservatives have given in to the false notion that there is a disconnect between a person’s politics and faith. I cover this in my two part series Faith and Politics at my blog the Truth Manifesto. But the reality is that it’s impossible….if the faith is real.

Oftentimes, more so in our day and age, we have to stand in the gap alone, screaming, “This is the way. Walk ye in it.” Truth is truth in all areas at all times. We should first be about the ultimate Truth which all truth is founded on. That is where we need to get it right because if we get it wrong there, everything else is tainted at the root. It will effect our total worldview.

Having Done All, Stand

The Lord Jesus was popular…for a minute. When He raised the bar at what it would take to follow Him, people threw up the peace sign with their fingers and hit the road.  His disciples abandoned Him. He stood alone to take on the sins of the world because the world hated Truth and still does.

The are many examples in the scriptures and history of godly men and women standing alone for truth: the midwives against the Pharaoh, Elijah against the prophets of Baal, Daniel when he was told not to pray to anyone except an idol, Rahab in the taking of Jericho, Jeremiah when prophesying of Judah’s impending destruction, Stephen standing before the Sanhedrin, Martin Luther in the Council of Trent, on and on.

It is a scriptural reality that those who follow the Lord will have to stand in the minority. We will not be the majority because of sin’s onward progression and man’s love of it. People will hate us simply on the basis that we follow Christ. John 15:19-21:

If ye were of the world, the world would love its own: but because ye are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you. Remember the word that I said unto you, A servant is not greater than his lord. If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they kept my word, they will keep yours also. But all these things will they do unto you for my name’s sake, because they know not him that sent me.

This is especially true within the political realm. Just because someone is a conservative doesn’t mean that they’re my brother, sister, or friend. Most are simply allies. Ultimately, my cause is for Christ and more often than not, conservatives have a cause that on the surface may be correct in principle, but ultimately it’s a cause that will fail because God’s not in it.

Sometimes Less Is More

I don’t say all of these things simply to be critical but to call attention to the reality that those who really stand for truth are in the minority. Even amongst conservatives. The “In God We Trust” platitude, though nice to hear is ultimately an untrue statement. Get some conservatives in a room and start talking about God. Some of them won’t speak because they won’t know what to say, others will say something but will reveal how woefully ignorant they are about God, and a small few, the minority, will present Him in the way He truly is. These are usually the same people endeavoring to live as He wants them to live. For them, Truth isn’t just about being right or wrong, fact or fiction. Truth is a person.

So, though I am conservative, I find myself standing alone many times among conservatives because of the Truth I cling to. I have no problem with that whatsoever. I’m not here to compete in a popularity contest. I’m here to stand for Truth and to spread it to any who would listen. Because that’s more effective and will outlast any political system or ideology.

This is the encouragement that I want to give you today. For those who know what I’m talking about, we’re in the business of dealing with the hearts and souls of people. It’s very simple. Before kingdoms can change, men must change. Though the odds look as if they’re against us, don’t pay it any attention. Don’t play the odds. We already know the end. We win.
